If there's any place in Spelunky to use the ropes you've been hanging onto, it's the ice caves. One well-placed rope can save you all kinds of trouble there.
Also, yes, frozen cavemen will come to life if you get them out of the ice. They're not the missing link, though...just more baddies to deal with. That's why you should just leave them frozen.
